Lucy Kruger started playing live shows in South Africa after finishing her Honours Degree in Drama at Rhodes University (2012). After the release of her debut album, ‘Summer’s Not That Simple’ (2015), the band was booked by some of the country’s most respected live music festivals, including Endless Daze, Oppikoppi, Rocking The Daisies, and Up The Creek.

In 2018, Lucy Kruger relocated to Berlin, where she was picked up by German-based label Unique Records and publishing house Schubert Records. The two signed Lucy Kruger and released her second full-length album, ‘Sleeping Tapes for Some Girls.’ The band played a headline German tour, which ended with a sold-out show at Roter Salon, one of the venues in Berlin’s prestigious Volksbuhne Theatre. The album was reviewed and featured in publications such as Post-Punk, Radioaktiv, Musik Review, Radio Eins, and The Daily Indie.

In 2020, Lucy Kruger developed a concept for two albums that would follow ‘Sleeping Tapes for Some Girls’, completing a trilogy. She started to rehearse and compose with what would become the current formation of the Lost Boys, including Liú Mottes (guitar), Andreas Miranda (bass), Martin Perett (drums), Gidon Carmel (drums) and Jean-Louise Parker (viola). The band was awarded funding from Initiative Musik (German federal funds) to record both records.

The second album in the trilogy, ‘Transit Tapes (For Women Who Move Furniture Around)’ was released in 2021 and launched at Astra Kulturhaus. The album was well-received by critics and was given 4 out of 5 stars by Mojo Magazine. Their third album in the tapes series, ‘Teen Tapes (for performing your own stunts)’ was released in April 2022 at Lido in Berlin and was followed by a European tour that saw them headlining shows in Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, South Africa, Denmark, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, France, Austria and Belgium. The band played a number of highly respected music festivals in Europe, including Rheeperbahn, Fusion, Maifeld Derby, Wave-Gotik Treffen, South of Silence, Immergut, and Left of The Dial.

One of the most respected newspapers in South Africa, ‘The Daily Maverick’ reviewed their performance at ‘Left of The Dial’ festival in the Netherlands, writing, ‘Kruger and her bandmates moved through their songs with graceful intensity, creating an atmosphere that was charged with enough energy to encircle all onlookers in a near-hypnotic close embrace.’

In April this year, the band released their latest record, ‘Heaving’ – a vivid and visceral collection of songs that saw the band boldly enter into new territory. The online music publication Post-Punk writes that it drifts between “intimacy and euphoria… We hear the ethereal experimental sounds of Delia Derbyshire reverberating through the captivating introduction, but the raw and visceral energy of PJ Harvey, Hole, and Garbage soon crashes the party.”

Heaving was released by Unique Records in Europe and by Metropolis in North America.

Lucy Kruger has earned a reputation as a unique and accomplished vocalist and songwriter. Earlier this year, she co-wrote and recorded a song with the well-known music group, ‘The Frank Popp Ensemble.’ She also features as a vocalist on the latest releases of ‘The Underground Youth’ as well as the highly respected alternative group ‘Swans.’

In November 2022, Lucy was selected to be part of the Keychange initiative, a global network and movement working towards gender equality in the music industry. Keychange is led by the Reeperbahn Festival in Germany, PRS Foundation in the UK, and Musikcentrum Öst in Sweden and funded by Creative Europe.

In June this year, the band won the Europavox Spotlight Prize and will be performing at a number of the Europavox festivals taking place over the next year.
